5 Things You Should Not Do On Facebook

We now live in a world where social media is a part of our everyday lives- For our friends, for our jobs, and unfortunately even for a sense of self-value. (a whole bunch of "likes" on something posted is QUITE the ego boost if you ask me) Facebook has even become a daily (or hourly) need for many. during the days Myspace reined supreme, it was difficult enough to manage statuses and pictures that would win us the approval of our friends. But now that we live in a time where social media can be just as important in our professional life as it can be in our social life, we're having to learn how to blend the two worlds while gaining satisfaction and approval from both. What mistakes do we need to watch out for on the way?

1. The Racy Pictures
This, of course, should be the most obvious of the list. Any pictures of you doing obscene or offensive things at parties, or pictures that only contain a few inches of clothing should not be uploaded to your Facebook. Its obviously unprofessional, but it creates negative thoughts about you in your social circle as well.

2. Constant Promotion
Its one thing to link posts or upload pictures of anything Small Business or Blog related- But constantly posting statuses about it, or continuously asking people to like a page or check out a website is spammy.. and your "friends" won't want to be your friend for very long.

3. Excessively Foul Language
Even the best of us let one of those words fly every once in a while. We're all human. We let our emotions get the best of us and it happens- even on Facebook. But when it comes to the online world, we have more time to think and to rationalize what we are about to say. When you're online, things shouldn't be quite as impulsive. So they should slip out only once in a very great while. Posting statuses and comments that would make your mother gasp is not something you should be trying to do.. its not cool. Trust me.

4. Relationship problems
There are certain things you shouldn't just lay out it the open. Its one thing to call up you girlfriends and talk it out with them when you have a problem with your man.. But complaining or flat out talking crap about him on Facebook isn't going to solve anything. 1.) its your business and his business. Its not fair for you to plaster whatever problem your having all over the Internet. and 2.) Whatever problem you had- he's not going to fix it now. He's just going to be angry. (same basic principle applies to friend-fights as well.)

5. Talking Down a Company
There are very few people in the world who are lucky enough to do what they love for a living. While those people have it good, the rest of us are left to drag ourselves to work every morning hoping that today will finally be the day something better comes along. But using Facebook as a means to vent your frustration or hate toward the company you work for isn't going to get you anywhere. Think of it this way: The owner of a company is always going to want others to think positively about the company he or she owns. If someone is constantly publicly (as Facebook is pretty public people) bashing the company they currently work for, who's to say they won't do the same to you and your company if you hire them? Would you want that? No, you wouldn't. And in the social aspect of it, your friends will be able to relate with you when it comes to disliking your job. But when all of your posts are negative, its going to drive all of them away as well. Misery loves its company, but those feelings will remain unrequited.

  1. Lauren, I could not agree with you more! There are so many unwritten rules of Facebook, it's really time that someone wrote them down. It would be great for people to begin developing filters, especially with some of the things I see posted on a daily basis. Remembering that the internet is a public place is such an important thing to keep in mind when you are making decisions on how to represent yourself. Thank you for sharing this!
