Suzanne of Awkwardly Chic Transitions us Into Fall

BCBGeneration heels | calvin klein dress | brixton hue clutch | obey ring | random bracelets
as long summer days and even longer summer nights become more of a distant memory, the crisp air of fall beckons me.  i dream of cold air, tights, boots, apple cider, and football.  fall is easily my favorite season, yet i struggle with leaving my summer clothes behind.  but who says you can't wear your summer clothes long after the season has ended?

i'm here today to show you how to transition easily from summer to fall.  since bright colors are right on trend for fall 2011, i decided to show you how to mix and match a brightly colored dress, making it perfect for cold days. here are some of my favorite fashion tips to help you transition seamlessly:

aldo heels | merona tights | calvin klein dress | b.bennett blazer
  • layer a shirt underneath your dress.  it's got a bit of a schoolgirl vibe, but it also provides coverage for bare arms.  i love the preppy look, and the clean lines of a white button-down scream 10th grade math class to me.
  • tights!  tights, tights, tights!  i can't wait for the weather to get just a bit colder here so i can start wearing tights!  i have way more pairs than i care to admit, but they are the easiest way to transition a summer dress or skirt into a perfect fall piece.  look for different colors and textures to bring it all together.  *side note:  if you do wear tights, make sure you put a slip on underneath your skirt.  that way your tights won't stick to your skirt and cling where it really shouldn't.
  • neutral & rich colors.  fall is the time to bring out plums, deep greens and blues, and browns.  pair a dark brown belt with some eggplant colored tights and an oatmeal colored blazer to tone down the brightness of the dress and make it autumn-appropriate.
  • blazers.  i wear blazers year-round, but i have a few that are for the colder months that i am excited to bring out.  they are an easy cover up, but also provide a little bit of sass to an outfit that a cardigan just can't.
Other fall transitions include:  knee-high boots, cardigans, scarves, and lots of layers.  don't be afraid to layer a few pieces, but make sure that they lie correctly on your body to not cause unnecessary bulk.
On that note, I want to wish you all a very happy Autumn season!  Here's to football, fires, tights, and hot apple cider!
